Drawing Challenges
For this project, we had to do drawing challenges. Part 1 was to draw on an object, and then Part 2 was to select four additional works to create using different combinations made from lists of materials, processes, and themes.
My first piece was an elephant made from paper, paint, and marbles. I cut out a shape of an elephant, which is one of my favorite animals. When I was in preschool, I learned a painting technique where I take marbles and dip them in paint, then I take a box and put the marbles in the box so they can roll around and spread the paint. So I taped my elephant cutout in the box and rolled the marbles around so that different colors of paint could create some cool effects on the paper. I loved how it turned out because it had a "Jackson Pollock" look to it.
The next piece is an origami box made out of paper, glue, and sequins. For this piece, I went with the theme from the alternate syllabus, which was "Design a box within a box to illustrate selfishness". I took a piece of printer paper and used origami skills to fold it into a box. I then took a piece of the scrap paper and made it into a smaller box, and taped that in the bigger box. I then decided to "bedazzle" this piece too, so I drizzled glue all over the bigger box and attached sequins to it. I thought this piece turned out cute.
My last and probably my favorite piece was this diagram of countries that I made with the mouse board, embroidery floss, tape, bamboo hoop, and cross stitch cloth. I have traveled to many different countries including: China, Taiwan, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Canada, and of course around the USA. I wanted to represent all of those countries so I used my friendship bracelet making skills to tie together the colors of each country's flag using embroidery floss. I then wanted to also bring them all together somehow, so I decided to cross stitch a globe so that they could all come together in the middle. When I was done, I put a bamboo hoop around the cross stitch cloth and then tied the globe to the mouse board. Then I taped each country flag to board and put the ends under the globe. The cross stitching part took the longest, but I'm so happy with how it turned out.
Overall, I really enjoyed this project. I did have artist's block at the beginning when coming up with ideas, but I'm happy with how my pieces turned out. This project was fun because it encouraged us to go and find objects that we could transform into amazing works of art.

My next piece involved a large glass candleholder that I purchased at Michaels along with tissue paper, glue, and glitter. I kind of wanted to create a cool "stained glass" look, so I glued pieces of different colored tissue paper around the candleholder. I also wanted to "bedazzle" it a little bit, so I put glue on the top rim and sprinkled glitter all over it. It did get pretty messy, especially with the glitter, but I thought it turned out pretty cute.
